Junior Boys Volleyball Championships

27-11-2009
For the first time in ten years a boy’s volleyball team from Manurewa High School has won top honours at the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Volleyball Championships.

Manurewa High School sports coordinator, Melina Martene, says the team were “over the moon” with their win, particularly as they were seeded 24th heading into the champs.  “To come away with 1st place is incredible - never has such a low seeded team taken out the tournament.”

Under the watchful eye of 17 year olds Tina Sione and Jacob Faiva – the two youngest coaches at the tournament – the team put heart and soul into every performance and grew from strength to strength as the tournament progressed.  They analysed their efforts and made improvements where necessary.

Raymond Fuilala was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.  Both Raymond Fuilala and Richard Mariota were selected for the Auckland Secondary Schools Team to compete at the forthcoming Inter Provincial Championships.

Vincent Faalasia, Ausage Sione, Lavi Levao and Soma Leota were selected for the Counties Secondary Schools Team who will also compete at the same tournament.

Congratulations to the team and special thanks to Tina Sione, Jacob Faiva and Miss Hunter for their tireless support and hard work.
