Welcome to our new Principal

Mr Salvatore Gargiulo has officially begun his principalship of Manurewa High School.  

Mr Gargiulo’s wealth of educational experience will stand him in good stead as he begins the challenge of leading one of New Zealand’s largest public secondary schools.

Mr Gargiulo’s most recent role was offshore as Head of the Aga Khan Secondary School in Tanzania, an international co-education school in the capital of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam.  Prior to his role in Tanzania, Mr Gargiulo worked as Deputy Director of Choueifat School in Dubai.

Mr Gargiulo also has extensive experience within New Zealand, having served eighteen years as both Deputy Principal and Principal of Nelson College.  Nelson College has a reputation for both academic, sporting and cultural excellence, and during his time at the all-boys school, Mr Gargiulo implemented a number of successful initiatives including leadership training programmes, role modelling and mentoring programmes, future problem solving initiatives, an assertive discipline system (encouraging students to take responsibility for their actions), community initiatives to highlight the important role of fathers, and the creation of an international exchange programme.  Mr Gargiulo was also actively involved in sporting and cultural activities during his time at Nelson College.

Mr Gargiulo has been involved in developing future and present educational leaders across New Zealand through his participation in a large number of educational conferences and publications. He has presented on varied topics including gifted and talented education, professional assessment, investigative teaching and working with boys.  Mr Gargiulo worked alongside Celia Lashlie on the “Good Man Project” and has co-authored text books in Mathematics and Gifted Education.

Prior to his time at Nelson College, Mr Gargiulo was a lecturer at the Auckland College of Education.

In 2007 Mr Gargiulo was awarded a Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for his services to educational leadership.
