Science mentoring scheme

21-02-2010
Students from Manurewa High School are benefiting from an innovative scheme, aimed at matching students with particular needs to professionals within the community who can help them.

The scheme, known as Futureintech, aims to provide professional mentors to students.

The mentor’s role is to inspire, motivate and elevate the student beyond school curriculum level.

Manurewa High School science teacher, Mrs Fenella Colyer, says the scheme was a “huge help” to her science students last year.  “One of our students is working towards a prestigious science award, and needed access to microbiology expertise and equipment.  The Futureintech programme matched him up with some professors at Auckland University who have played an instrumental role in helping him with his long-term project.”

The Futureintech programme can also arrange for young engineers and professional people in science careers to come and speak to a class.
