Manurewa High had 9 teams compete on Saturday 6 March, the most teams the school has ever entered. Competition was fierce amongst the 104 teams from Auckland, with Manurewa High gaining the following podium finishes:
1st Senior Boys Division One Championship final W6
2nd Senior Mixed Division Two Championship final W6
2nd Senior Mixed Division One Championship final W6
3rd Senior Mixed Division One plate final W6
3rd Senior Girls Division One Championship final W6
Melina Martene, school sports coordinator, said “All of our crews performed extremely well and I was so proud of their efforts. Our top girls came third and have a bit of work to do before Nationals. Success starts at training, so we have some intense sessions coming up!”
Ms Martene noted a standout performance from the Senior Boys Division One W6 team. “For them to win Auckland is huge. Only one of them (Leydon) is back from last year’s team. The rest of the team are new and with one year 10 student it’s even more impressive to gain top honours. We have only been training for two weeks so we were really happy with the win - especially to hold off really strong De La Salle and James Cook High crews.”
The senior boys division one team aren’t satisfied with winning Auckland. They are now putting in the hard yards at training, hoping to win the Nationals. Last year Manurewa High’s senior boy’s team won silver in the 250m event. Ms Martene says “Last year we came home from the 2009 Nationals with 4 medals. In 2010 we want more!”
