Future of Work - A Series of Inspirational Talks for our learning community

What is this?

A series of workshops with interaction between inspirational entrepreneurs and the Manurewa High School community that support students, staff and whaanau to learn about developments affecting the future of work.

Launched during the Covid-19 lockdown in August 2021, Series 1 featured:

  • Climate Change / Sustainability: The work opportunities arising from our response to put the world right.
  • Purpose, Values & Leadership
  • Emerging Technologies: The changes to the workforce as a result of increased technology know-how.

Series 2 - held in November 2021 - focused on the Future of Food. Entrepreneurs highlighted shifts in consumer demands and consequential change to the food industry.

The learning design supports the National Educational Learning Priority related to the Future of Learning and Work.

Thanks to our speakers, and our advisers

Founding team:

  • David Irving (Chair) - former CEO of Watties and founder of The Icehouse. Our organising team includes:

Also grateful for many others who have been on the journey:

  • Future Work Studio - helped us to contextualise the Future of Work for our very first stakeholders.
  • Kinley Salmon - author of Jobs, Robots and Us - The Future of Work in New Zealand. Kinley helped us to prototype a learning process with a presentation on his book, live from London where he writes for The Economist.
  • EY Foundation and EY People - Rohini Ram helped to lead our prototype learning event, providing context on the importance of our diverse, youthful community for the Future of Work. EY team members of our Mentoring for Success collaboration were also a valuable part of this prototype, working with students to explore the significance of Kinley's Future of Work scenarios.
  • Future of Work Collective - helped us to explore the "micro practices" that are already shaping how work gets done, especially online.
  • The Icehouse - connecting us with Inspirational Speakers.
  • Manurewa High Business Academy - championing pathways to employment and entrepreneurship through programmes like the Passport to Employment course with Mainfreight, Hynds, Ingram Micro, Lineage, J&R Construction. Also our Makerspace.
  • Westpac NZ Govt Innovation Fund - supporting our kaupapa for the Future of Work funding theme.
  • Ben Judge, Ruth Malo, Mary Aue.
